"WE ARE ALL ABOUT VACATION FUN IN MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA"

First stop- Breakfast
Being snowbirds ourselves, there is one thing we know for sure, that we all have in common. We like a good hearty breakfast, done economically, and we like any and all Early Bird Specials. I thought today we might visit three of these purveyors of tasty morning fare. What we offer here are simply our first impressions on a given day. Your own knowledge may be quite different and we would be happy to hear from you.

This time we are visiting three establishments, on three different mornings, along Hwy 17, just South of Myrtle Beach in the bustling little town of Surfside Beach. Surfside is the home of the gigantic Hudson Flea Market, as well as being directly on the main route from Myrtle Beach to the “must-see” Brookgreen Gardens.

The Golden Egg

Our first stop is The Golden Egg, at 415 Hwy 17, in Surfside. The decor is somewhat dated, but the staff was very friendly and helpful.
It didn't start off well when we were seated at a booth that must have been vacated in a hurry. The previous occupant's dirty handkerchief still remained under the table. We asked for a new booth, which we were taken to with profound apologies. No problem, simply an oversight that could happen anywhere. We ordered the 6 piece cinnamon, French toast breakfast and the 3 pancake breakfast. The 6 pieces turned out to be 4 when delivered, but was quickly rectified when brought to the server's attention. I like nice fluffy hot cakes, but mine were like retread tires that seemed to separate in layers. The sausage was barely warm, and the home fries looked like the black, stubby remnants from the skillet. No glasses of water were offered, and we had to ask for coffee refills. (Always a real downer with us as we do appreciate our morning coffee.) We may have just caught them on a bad morning, but probably won't soon visit them again.

The next morning, we tried Ted at 1003 Hwy 17 in Surfside. We caught them on a good morning. Everything was tasty and well prepared. They have a "Seniors' Menu" page and the # 2 selection, consisting of one egg, 3 bacon strips, grits, and whole wheat toast, was all it could be. We asked that we might have extra butter with the grits and it came from the kitchen, nicely buttered. The biscuits with sausage gravy, and a sunnyside-up egg on top, brought back fond memories of nicely prepared military breakfasts from my past (yes, that is meant as a sincere compliment). The atmosphere was bright and cheery, and the staff friendly and attentive. All in all, a very good place for a very fine breakfast.

Omega Pancake House

The third morning we dropped by Nick Pournara's Omega Pancake House, at 1617 Hwy 17 in Surfside Beach. The only negative we can come up with is that the service was a bit on the slow side on this particular day, though the restaurant was not particularly crowded. The decor is quite inviting with beautiful murals of sun-filled days, in colorful towns, along the Mediterranean. It just has to put you in a good frame of mind. Water was served along with our coffee and the cups were kept filled without having to ask. They offer a page of "Country Lunch Specials" for $6.95, from 11am til 2pm, so we opted for brunch instead of breakfast. The special includes a choice of 1 meat (fried chicken, meatloaf, beef tips over rice, or grilled pork chop), 2 sides (a nice Southern collection including rice & gravy, baked beans, sweet potato casserole, and collard greens, along with the usual choices), a sweet roll, drink, and dessert of the day (banana "flavored" pudding). A hearty thumbs up for the fried chicken, beef tips, collard greens and sweet potato casserole. The entire meal was prepared well and served hot. We will be back.
